This history stretches back centuries to construction of the Darse Vielle, begun under King Henry IV. The arsenal—dedicated to building and repairing the royal fleet—was established there. Handed over to the British by royalists in 1793, Toulon also witnessed the first exploits of a young, then-unknown captain: Napoleon Bonaparte. Up to the 19th century, Toulon was the departure and arrival port for colonial and military expeditions to the African continent.
Today, many places testify to the city’s military identity: the Tour Royale, a 16th-century defensive work; Place d’Armes, designed by Colbert for troop reviews; the Musée-Mémorial du Débarquement de Provence; and the Musée de la Marine. There you’ll see the monumental Arsenal gate, composed of four Greek columns with two statues—Mars, god of war, and Minerva, goddess of wisdom.
