Girona is known for its old town, considered one of the best preserved in Spain. Built on a hill, it is also known for its beautiful staircases, such as the one leading to the Església de Sant Martí, or the 96-step staircase leading to Girona Cathedral. The Onyar River separates the old town from the modern part and offers pleasant walks and picnics not far from the center. La Rambla de la Libertat, a pedestrian area, offers many unique cafés, arcades, and countless shops.

The monumental cathedral of Girona, which has the widest Gothic nave in the world, sits at the top of a long stone staircase. The construction of this superb basilica took more than four centuries. Admission to the cathedral also includes access to its cloister and museum and offers the chance to discover a collection of ecclesiastical artifacts, medieval tapestries, and manuscripts.

For culture lovers, Girona has many art galleries and history museums. The Museu del Cinema presents the history of cinema through a private collection. A little further south is a former Capuchin convent that now houses the Museo de História, a museum on the city’s history focusing particularly on prehistory. In the former Episcopal Palace—an artwork in itself—the Girona Art Museum houses the most important collection of the diocese and province.
